Manga I'm Reading Right Now

Image
Having entered the manga scene fairly late, I thought I would compile a list of three mangas I am currently reading / have read that will hopefully entice you into reading too.   1. Chainsaw Man With the announcement of the Chainsaw Man anime adapatation by MAPPA studios, I was keen to throw myself into the world of Chainsaw Man through the manga to get me hyped for the anime. Chainsaw Man is a shonen series that follows the story of Denji, a young man struggling with debts he inherits from his now deceased father, repaying his debts by killing demons with his companion Pochita who is a dog demon that acts as Denji's chainsaw. Whilst out on a bounty, he is set up and is killed by those who he repays his debt too. Its here where he fuses with Pochita who sacrifices his life to restore Denji's and thus, Chainsaw Man is born. The manga is a really enjoyable read. Whilst nothing groundbreaking storywise, its comedy holds up and makes it an enjoyable read throughout, the mai...

Has Demon Slayer Set the New Standard for Animation?

Image
(Source: ComicBook.com) The review ahead will contain spoilers so spoiler warning ahead. As the Demon Slayer Entertainment District arc has reached its conclusion, I believe it is definitely time to reflect on such an incredible job that Studio Ufotable has done on an animation level. Demon Slayer Mugen Train arc winning best animation at the 2022 Crunchyroll awards was not surprising to me, however, it did not come without its controversy as people called to attention the fact it was the only anime movie in contention for winning the award. Definitely agreeing with that sentiment as movies usually have a higher budget for production it was definitely a controversial yet deserved win for Ufotable.  With the release of the newest season it has completely blown away any expectations I had going into it. Each episode just became more and more of a technical marvel to view. I can confidently say that Ufotable have set a clear standard for how production studios tackle their anim...

Why is Anime Still 'Hated'?

Image
(Source: Baron News by Andrew Hsieh)   Whilst anime has slowly approached mainstream levels of attention, it still has not reached the Western media levels of social attention. Due to this those from outside looking into the anime fanbase simply see it as teenagers and grown adults watching childish foreign cartoons. This is not the case, growing up I spent my time watching Pokemon, Digimon, and One Piece not realising I had only scratched the surface of shows and the culture as a whole. It was during this time I began to observe that in Scotland specifically, there was very little communities of people who seemed to enjoy anime potentially due to being interested in a predominantly sports culture here leading to it being hard to admit to liking anime without being taunted or becoming a social punching bag. Anime has some of the most creative and enjoyable story telling I have ever viewed rivalling that of Western and Hollywood productions making it that little bit more frus...

Kotaro Lives Alone - Netflix's New Anime Adaptation (A Review)

Image
Netflix have expanded upon their ever extending catalogue of anime shows. Up next was a Netflix Original adaptation of Mami Tsumura's manga series " Kotarou wa Hitorigurashi". The show follows the life of protagonist Kotaro, Sato, a well off, four year old child who moves into an apartment block, it's here where he meets his neighbour Karino, Shin, a failing unmotivated manga artist. Throughout the ten part structure of season one we follow Kotaro and Karino's relationship whilst being given snippets of Kotaro's past, piecing together the puzzle of his seemingly dark relationship with his parents. Kotaro Lives Alone can be described as a 'comedy slice of life' anime that tackles real world topics such as neglect, domestic violence, debt, child abuse and death to name a few, all through the eyes of Kotaro.      (source: What's on Netflix) My spoiler free review will be structured as follows:  Story: Following Kotaro as he carries out his independant...
